Review of TrackIR 4 Ultra from NaturalPoint
Screenshots are quite useless in a review for TrackIR 4 Ultra so I've made a video on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP0nWIWCsJE.
Starting off with the packaging - the box contains: TrackIr, TrackClip PRO, Vector Clip, an Installation CD, Quick Start Guide, rFactor and Battle of Britain II. Not only are you saving from buying the Vector Clip and TrackClip seperately, but you get 2 free games as well.
Installation is very quick and troubleless. The software enables you to customise every aspect, and has premade profiles for all the major games compatible with this, including FS2002, FS2004, FSX, CFS3, IL-2 Sturmovik and IL-2 Forgotten Battles. It also enables you to change the amount you have to turn your head to see behind in the game.
To get it working, you just need to start up the TrackIR software before you start Flight Simulator X. Then you'll need to plug in the device that sites on your moniter (USB) and just attatch the vector clip to the cap, OR if you're using the TrackClip Pro, attatch it to your headset. There's a USB Port on the TrackClip Pro so they both together only use 1 USB Port, which is handy if you also have a joystick plugged in.
Unfortunately, the TrackClip Pro digs into my head when attatched to my headset so I use the Vector Clip only, but it should clip onto most normal headsets quite easily.
The great thing about it is that all head movements are amplified. If you move 35 degrees to the left of right, you're already looking at the back of your aircraft, though you can customise this to your taste.
The Vector Clip makes use of all 5 degrees of freedom/movement: Yaw (Left/Right), Pitch (Up/Down), Roll (Tilted angles), Lean (Left/Right), Raise (Up/Down) and Zoom (In/Out).
In the Virtual Cockpit, looking around is as you would in real life. In the 2D cockpit, your view of outside the plane moves in accordance with your head and in Locked Spot view, moving your head left and right moves the viewpoint around.
TrackIR 4 Ultra adds a whole new level of realism to the game. You can pivot around cockpit obstructions to see what's behind, move down and see all the little flicks and switches you never realised were there, look at your radio stack, and a whole lot more. Taxiing is much more easier as you can now see where you're going. Once you get this, it's very difficult to go without.
The pan view on the joystick simply can't change your view as smoothly as TrackIR can. For those concerned about neck pain: NaturalPoint have only ever received 2 complaints about neck pain from people who are using the device wrongly. TrackIR truly enhances your Flight Simulator experience, and gets a 10/10 from me.
